Forum: movies Subject: new video/audio player "opt in" is live!

Happy Holidays!

We have a major update to our audio/video player (jwplayer) where we are moving from their version 5 family to their version 6 family.

We had to customize it a lot less, and they've done a lot of development, which means it should most likely work both better and in even more environments.

Please use this forum post to give us feedback, ask questions, or relay concerns/bugs/issues.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Jan 6, 2014: updated jwplayer from v6.1 to v6.7 -- this adds tooltip thumbnails over video seek bar (for video items) and a horizontal volume slider for audio items.

UPDATE: Jan 26, 2013: the default is the NEW player
UPDATE: Confirmed/known -- iOS will not auto-advance tracks when Safari Mobile is not in focus like older player used to before. Working on workaround, but will take some time.
UPDATE: Feb 7, 2013: updated to make iOS auto-advance tracks when safari mobile is in background
UPDATE: Feb 7, 2013: audio items now have vertical volume control when in html5 mode (ie: not flash mode)

Forum: movies Subject: media title in embedded player

Hi,
I'm planning to embed the video player from archive.org to illustrate some articles in an online publication. For the embed code I'm following the recommendations on http://archive.org/help/video.php
The structure of the article is like this:

["Some text... See doc 1"]

["Some text... See doc 2"]

["Some text... See doc 3"]

There is a test item here: http://ethnomusicologie.fr/test-item

The problem is that the button displayed in the middle of the video always shows "1." before the title of the video. Hence it is incoherent with the way the documents are referred to in the text of the article (document 3 still has a "1." before the title).

I use the iframe code specified in the section "Embed a single specific video file for item with 2+ video files". The player probably thinks that it still has a playlist, even though it is just one file long.

I don't actually need that number on the button. But I couldn't find a way to hide it in the iframe tag. In the options of the standard jwplayer I found "displaytitle" (boolean) and "title" (arbitrary string). But setting these in the iframe code has no effect.

A few years ago, I worked on a similar project, where we embedded videos from archive.org. The code used the tag. See an example here: http://ateliers.revues.org/8827 Is it still ok to use this method (which circumvents the problem described above) or is it deprecated?

Can someone please tell me how I can send the email for one of these videos by using my own provider ? Every time I try this sight tells me that it doesn't have my identify. I have reset the password and also given my email address three times and still can't get it to transfer the correct information. I truly love this sight for what it has to offer but it would be a great improvement to be able to share audio or video with some of my friends. Thank you in advance for you most needed service. Yours truly, will249

Forum: movies Subject: Track list doubled

Hi, on a few albums, e.g.:

http://archive.org/details/ashrilyn_crystal_flowers

I'm seeing tracks displayed twice in the track list. It looks like:

1. Darkness
2. Darkness
3. The Vampire
4. The Vampire
... and so on for every track. Looks like there are 16 tracks when that album in fact has 8.

However, clicking on the second item in the list actually doesn't play "Darkness", it plays the second track. And clicking on tracks 9-16 does nothing. So, it's like the list is being displayed wrong, but internally it's correct. Can you fix this? Thanks!

all originals that are in formats the player can use will be in the playlist. since you uploaded both mp3 and ogg files they will both appear. had they been derived from the flac on the preferred format, mp3, would appear in the player.

Makes sense, but even if that is the intended behavior, see my last paragraph. The displayed track list doesn't match what's played.

ok fix is coming.
what you are seeing only happens when in flash mode (ie: not in html5 mode).

in html5 mode, track list is "doubled" and all can be played.
in flash mode, track list is "doubled" but only first 8 mp3 can be played.

the issue, which is a total surprise to me, is that the jwplayer code we use is auto-shrinking/filtering down the playlist we give it when it determines it can't play some of the entries (eg: flash can't play .ogg)

fix is coded and forthcoming -- will auto-shrink the list to 8 for this item.
finalizing broader testing and such now...

yup. it's a combination of two originals, flash and i'm guessing you're using firefox or safari because that does not happen in chrome. i will mention it to an engineer. meanwhile i'd suggest letting the system derive the formats for the player to avoid all these issues.

Can you PLEASE fix the player so that it remembers that I prefer flash, and I can remove the disaster that is HTML5 audio from my life completely!
In case you haven't worked it out yet, HTML5 audio only works properly on PC webkit based browsers if your computer uses a realtek sound chip, or a few of it's derivatives. If you use any other (i.e. better) playback system it sounds like someone's jumping on a heap of cellophane bags. Not good.....

Recently I've started getting "Error loading media: File could not be played!" message when attempting to play my video file with the html5 player. When I switch to the "prefer flash" version the buffer image just keeps spinning.

I originally thought it might be an issue with our file, so we re-derived it and uploaded it again, but the same thing happens when I try to play the new file.

I have since gone back to re-watch some from the past and they are not working now either!

I'm pretty sure my computer is up-to-date and have tried it on a couple different machines.

Here is where I first noticed the problem: http://archive.org/details/05-19-2013SundayService
But like I said, now I can't get any of our vids to play.

I don't know what's going on and am hoping you can offer some advice.

I am getting exactly the same problem and error message when trying to play videos. I too have Windows 7 and use Firefox (25.0.1). On my laptop however, where I still use Windows XP and the same Firefox version, I have no such problem. This indicates it is an incompatibility with Windows 7 (64 bit). Another problem I keep getting, if a video does play, is the overlay of a smaller but completely black screen in the northwest corner as soon as the video starts to play. Has anyone else experienced this, I wonder?

I don't typically use other browsers, but that one works both ways in Chrome (Version 31.0.1650.63 m - it says it's up to date) too.

My video does not play in Chrome using Flash, but when I use html5 the audio plays, but the video is black.

I found that on certain dates of live shows I can't get the sings to transition automatically, and on others they do.
another big issue for me ,as I am on a smart phone, is that I can't scroll through all the songs. Or when I pick a song and go back to the song list the list won't progress downward so I can get to the songs on the bottom. And adjustments made to this issue would be awesome

Ironically, I hope this is the correct place to post this. The above link is incorrectly titled as Cuba - 1960. It was actually my father's show. He was on NBC for 16 years, from 1950 through 1966. Can this instead (please) be titled accurately? It would certainly help a lot of folks to be able to find it.
His name was "Dr. Albert E. Burke".
Just his name as the title would be great.
He narrates the entire program. I don't know why the reviewer didn't do this in the first place - would truly appreciate help.
Many thanks,

The video plays fine clicking on 'Ogg video'.

The video I try is:

Simply clicking the video player makes firefox quite hang. The sound comes a bit, but the images don't move.

Hi there,

Congratulation on the new player, it looks great.

The only down side for me is that - when embedding - there doesn't seem to be a way to disable the "related videos" feature. It doesn't seem to show videos really at all related, and so looks very strange when i am using it in my site. It would be really great if there was a way of disabling this feature.

Any chance?

Thanks

Adam.

OK, this should be fixed now. (wow, that was a toughie bug to squoosh).

figured out pretty rapidly it was due to trying to workaround issue with flash version and "anamorphic" video (eg: the pixels aren't 1:1)
eg: http://archive.org/embed/anamorphic

but that was screwing up, as you both patiently pointed out, other videos in fullscreen that were square pixels when the video aspect ration and one's monitor aspect ratio weren't the same.

sorry about that! my bad for not catching/noticing that sooner.
thanks for your patience with me/us and for the bug reports!

Hi Tracey,

The same behavior exists on two different machines with different graphics chipsets (Intel and AMD), and in three different browsers (Chrome, IE, and Firefox). Both are running Windows 8. The video clips I'm referencing are Computer Chronicles episodes with a 4:3 aspect ratio; in fullscreen mode they stretch to the 16:9 ratio of the monitor.

As you can see from the other reply, I'm not the only one experiencing this issue.

I have tried with my new Windows 8 four times to download "Flash" to be told that Flash is already on windows 8 but I have to make some very complicated "Menu adjustments" which are impossible - not if you are a new Windows 8 user :>)

I love the new player. My problem is with actually copying the embed code or video code. When you open the embed options and click on "select" the embed code is highlighted.
All good.
But, you cannot right click to copy it so you can paste it say in notepad. When you hover mouse over the section and right click you get a message "to learn more about embedding and formats" which leads you right back to the same page. That message the comes in place of the normal mouse right click "copy" does not function.

I really agree with BLEV- the new Flash installation has had "unintended consequences" -looks like pretty much localized at when people start using Windows 8? I have tried with my new Windows 8 four times to download "Flash" to be told that Flash is already on windows 8 but I have to make some very complicated "Menu adjustments" which are impossible - not if you are a new Windows 8 user :>)

Hi!

This is Radio Tortuga, from Mallorca, Spain. Frist of all, thank you for all your work, it's wonderful to community radios like us.

The issue: We're using your embedded player on this web:
http://radiotortuga.org/programes.html
There are 24 editions of the show "Paraula de Tortuga" (http://archive.org/details/ParaulaDeTortuga), but I can only see 21 of them in the embedded player. I'd be grateful if you could tell me why is this hapenning and if is there any solution.

Thanks a lot again!

for event=260 and event=261
there are only 4 and 7 files, so there is no scroll/cutoff.
if you cut the embed height down to something you want visually, it should add a scroll bar automatically for the files/tracks that don't fit

thx for the links, btw...

I did see it yesterday.
Are you saying that you did not see a scrollbar on the right side of the track listing that worked to see the rest of the track titles? We see them with chrome and firefox...

If so, it may be a browser thing I can try to track down...

No, I can see the scrollbar

What I am saying is with the current setup. The text of item two is partly cut off. It would be nice to set the height of the player to have it display full text instead of having people to scroll just to see the full text of the item.

I am getting hammered by my supervisor about this so I am hoping there is an option.

Thanks!

Maybe this link will demonstrate it better. The text of item two is not completely visible, and you wouldn't know there is a third item unless you scroll down. I've set the height to 400 for you to see.

I don't think that is something we plan on offering.
I am planning to make the player "auto-scroll" as songs/videos play, so that you're always paged in to the context around the currently playing track.

Would that help enough for you?

Dear Tracey
Happy New Year! Wish you all the best for the New Year.
Thank you so much for having the NASA recordings available.
we are currently working on a new fashion viral for a european fashion brand and are considering to include the sound of the countdown of apollo 11, starting at the 40 second before launch. On the archive i can only find it starting at -10 sec... but i found it on youtube.
Do you think you could grant us the authorization for that usage? we would need it in wav file if possible.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me directly.
Appreciate your quick response in this matter!
Many thanks!

the JS code that is stock jwplayer is obfuscated for speed of playback.
that javascript can be found and downloaded from http://www.longtailvideo.com/
the JS code that we use to customize/tailor it is not obfuscated.

the "unfree license" is to allow us to, for our viewers:
1) not hit jwplayer site for any analytics (we take user privacy seriously!)
2) remove the logo/watermark in the free version
3) enable the licensed-version "related videos" feature
4) enable the licensed-version "post to Facebook/twitter/email"

any player that plays mp3s, sure!

(but keep in mind while many newer browsers can play .mp3 files directly; many still rely on using "flash plugin" to play them back when on a web page).

and no, flash plugin is more depending on the browser and what *it* can do.

many newer browsers can play a mp3 via the relatively new html5 [audio] and [video] HTML tags. but older ones and still some newer ones cannot. so they rely on a browser plugin instead to playback the mp3. the most popular/obvious choice out there (eg: we and youtube does this) is to use the flash plugin since nearly all browsers have it.

Feature Request:

i have a webpage containing many archive.org embeds (your current jwplayer).

if a visitor clicks on more than one play button, they ALL play. that's very undesirable.

one embed should STOP playing, when another embed is clicked. Maybe that's available option for jwplayer?

many players nowadays do this, for example soundcloud embeds.

thx!

i found a couple ways to do this with jwplayer, and maybe there are easier ways.

http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/setup-issues-and-embedding/32163/how-can-i-have-multiple-videos-on-a-page-with-only-playing-one-at-a-time/

http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/setup-issues-and-embedding/24844/multiple-jwplayers-on-page-but-only-allow-one-to-be-played-at-a-time/

(not sure if this is for jwplayer)
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4196979/only-allow-one-audio-element-to-play-at-a-time

However, i'm not a very good javascript programmer, and more important, i'd like this behavior to somehow be contained in the player, without any extra coding (or an option with a switch).

can you guys implement this into your own player?

also, is there any styling available for your current player, like colors or changing the greek-forum icon into some other image?

thx

I had no problem playing and DL Dead and Radiators shows up until last month.
Now I cannot play any file - I have a Mac G4 PPC; is it possible that finally that platform will not work with The Archive?

* Java script enabled
* Flash plug in installed and enabled
* Flash version:10
* PPC Mac OS X 10.4.11
* AppleWebKit 533.19.4 Version 4.1.3
* Safari 533.19.4
* JW Player 6.8 4616
I did install TenFourFox in an attempt to get later version of Flash to work.
I have no problem viewing YouTube with no lag in buffering even on full
screen. Is anyone having similar problems or any ideas to correct situation?
I have spent 3-4 evenings trying to figure this out and am at wits end.

Yeah, I though that the 'problem was - that the audio was loaded according to 'duration' - so I added a few extra seconds of 'silence to part2 - and I reloaded it, but part 2 still came up third in the sequence!
Why don't these files load in the order they were uploaded?
Here is the link to the page where they located.

not sure i understand. there is only one file in that item.

note: if there is more than one file in an item they are ordered by alhpa-order in the playlist. so you can force an order by adding a number at the beginning of the file names such as 01, 02, 03, etc.

Yes, I changes it as I was not getting anything changed.
I noticed that it appeared they put into sequence by file size, so, I made the one larger than the other it didn't work.
These were titles pert 1, pert 2 part 3 - it didn't matter.
It doesn't make sense to me at all.

As of 12:00 am today, I can't easily play audio tracks from the archive with my ipod either, as I no longer have the option of using the old player. This has happened in one way or another every time archive has updated its player in the past, and it has always eventually been resolved, so I assume it will this time. But for now it's annoying. Accidentally, by flipping around with page-forward and -back buttons out of sheer frustration, I discovered that I can get a "play" (>) button to appear above the track list and it works, but I have to go to the previous page and then forward to the "present" page in order for this to happen, and sometimes this has to be done a few times to get it to work. As I usually listen to the archive via my ipod between 9 PM & 6 AM, when I'm away from my laptop, having to do this half awake in bed is kind of a pain. Is there anything I can update for this to be resolved, or is it something at your end? Thanks, you're awesome & I love you.

to be clear, you are talking about / having issues w/ advance to the next track after you can get a track playing right?

what works fine in that raw dir listing link above? there's no .m3u there, etc.

so is it still not working? iOS won't auto-advance (at least right now) to the next track if the media player is not in focus, unfortunately. I could have sworn it did *before*, so I will try to see if I can come up with a workaround...

Sorry... I was incorrect. It doesn't advance. But it does play the selected episode from the raw dir listing .mp3 file. I was so happy to at least do that i was confused as i had also tried my iPad and the player DOES work as it should there ( though the timeline button dragging is funky).

When i try to play a file with the player, the selected episode turns blue after a few seconds. The player "play" button turns into a "pause" button, but it doesn't start and the ounter never advances past 0:00. If i am playing another audio source, that source stops ( as it should ) after i select an episode in the archive player.

It didn't autoadvance if the player wasn't in focus, as i recall... And it did seem to be somewhat hit and miss even if it was in focus when the screen lock happened. It seemed like it would only autoadvance if the controls were visable in the player and the screen hadn't locked ( and sometimes it didn't lock for multiple episodes. I may be incorrect about how i remember it as i hadn't been using it more then a couple of weeks and mainly at night in bed so i usually am cutting some zzzz after an episode (if i make it that far) but usually woke up with Matt's voice in my ear, eager to put me back to sleep. ;)

OK, I've constructed a fairly experimental patch (but tested on ipad mini) going live now that should auto-advance when an iOS device is sleeping (still playing audio when goes to sleep) or the player (eg: Safari Mobile) is in the background.
(The JW folks will be getting back to me with any suggested adjustments or when this patch or similar might hit their release version. )

But at any rate, for our site, I think things should be working now for iOS!

iOS devices don't allow autoplay in most circumstances -- so you have to click the play icon or click a track song name under the player to start it. once play has started, it will autoadvance to the next song.

i have a 4th gen ipod device that i got for christmas 2012 specifically to use this site instead of the computer to listen to streaming greateful dead. it worked for a while (like dec and jan) and now it doesn't. there is no play button anymore. the problem is that before it only worked with the "old player" which i guess now would be the doubly old player. i don't get the play button to appear on the screen and when you tap on any individual file on the list it doesn't start to play.
please advise.
it also seems to load pages a lot more slowly.

thought i'd wait patiently while maybe the bugs got worked out. however, i'm still not having much success straming concerts on my i pod. i can play tunes when they are listed individually as mp3 files (for example, i can search under the steve kimock band and bring up only shows that have mp3 files and then click on them one at a time and play them.) that is not useful for stream only shows such as the dead. the play traingle button does not appear. also, if you click on the m3u file it starts to stream for awhile but then cuts out after about 10 minutes. this seems to have ebbn aproblem bfore because i saw others having the same difficulty in the forums ina round 2011.

also, another problem is that the speaker icon on the play bar only works as an on off/ mute switch where as before it used to work as a volume control. i can use the volume control on my computer's mixer, but even when i put it on as low as it goes, it's still too loud (depending what i'm aslo doing at the time).

thanks

partial answer -- for the volume control, I think you are talking about a PC not iPod at that point, and I think from what you say it's using the "flash plugin" route (maybe MSIE browser or an older browser).

For audio items, the volume control is a slider but only when using a newer browser that can use the "html5 route" (you can discern which it's using by right clicking -- the longer typical flash menu means flash plugin). Is your browser capable of playing .mp3 files?

yes, for the second part i wsa talking about streaming on a PC since (per the first part) the ipod isn't doing the job.

i think you are right about it depends on the browser because at work ( a new computer) if i hover over the speaker icon, the slider appears. at home that doesn't happen and that's a much older computer. i will try updating to ie 9.

thanks for the help.

Well it works now if you go and click the audio files under the player( individual files) but still nothing else works. And those are the same problems I had with mine as well. But like I said it works with the individual files. :)

There was no embed link, that's the problem. I followed the instructions on what to click, but it only brought up the ability to link it to facebook, twitter, etc. There was no code to embed it on a website.

at any rate, the intended click takes to popup that says, basically:

mouseover playing video
click the share icon (sort looks like: [<] )
the embed code will show there

It will be good timing. I record and upload the Irish Radio Show on Tuesdays, so I was about to upload today's show. The "DJ" is a friend from Ireland who owns an Irish Pub and on Tuesday mornings has a radio show broadcast from a local college campus. I record the show for him and upload it to Internet Archive then place the embed code on a website I made for him. It stays up for two weeks (which FCC regulations allow), then I replace it with the new week's show, that way people who can't listen to the show have a chance during the week to listen to it. The college has approved of it and we follow the FCC regulations strictly so not to worry you. Everything is proper. I've been using your site for about 2 years now and have been very please with the ease of your site. The new audio player has me stumped though...

but I'll need an archive.org /details/ page link to try to reproduce this.
the embed code is right there under the play/pause "controlbar", clear as day, for just about every setup we've tried, so I can't figure out how you can't see it...

I uploaded today's show, click on the embed link symbol, and up came the facebook, twitter icons AND the embed code! When I went to last week's show and clicked on the link, the code was finally available. Perhaps it was a glitch in the new audio player (there were many post on your blog stating the very same problem so I know it wasn't just me)that has been resolved, but I am very grateful that the code is now able to be accessed. Thank you for your help.

the problem is pretty straightforward...
the (only) mp4 in the item and thus the player was created by the uploader and is not web friendly.

specifically, it is not h.264 video (it is "mpeg4 / mp4v")
and the "moov atom" is at the back not the front
(more and more browsers are handling the second issue better (for example Chrome), but most browsers can't handle that and need to download the entire file first before playback, for example in "html5" mode)

i could do various fixes to this item, but as i'm not the owner, i'd feel that's inappropriate.
you could review the item to contact the owner and post our thread to see what they think? 8-)

Please allow users to view videos using the old player. RealPlayer can no longer show your videos because it cannot connect. I contributed money to archive.org site even before you started advertising for contributions and have been viewing your videos for years, but now cannot receive them. RealPlayer even had a pop up above the video asking you if you wanted to download it. The same pop up appeared on Chrome browser but now Chrome doesn't ask you if you want to download, and RealPlayer cannot get the video to play at all. Please go back to asking users if they prefer the old player, the new player, or flash.

you can still prefer flash with new player.
we aren't likely to go back or use old player -- there were major differences going from flowplayer => jwplayer v5 => jwplayer v6
sorry about that.

let's focus instead on sorting out your concerns.
you've tried the "Prefer flash?" link (requires cookies and JS) under the video? (you'll know you're getting flash if you "right click" during video play on our /details/ page since you'll see flash version in a menu, etc...)

RealPlayer had a great configuration with archive.org. It even popped up above the video asking you if you wanted to download it. Now you can't get the videos on RealPlayer at all. I've been using archive.org for years and have enjoyed it so much that I contributed money to the site even before you ran ads to get contributions. Now, alas! I am unable to bring up the videos. Please go back to allowing the user to bring up the video using the old player if he so desires.

This is just great, I truly appreciate the efforts of everyone at Archive.org.

I noticed the classic "brain that wouldn't die - upgrade" was commented by uploader as being "a better copy than previous".

I'm curious - ever since I saw the result of a friend's "image stabilizing" camera (shot out the back open door of a moving train) I've been impressed with image stabilization.

IF someone is trying to preserve an old movie - there are two issues:

1) Yes, the original may have had poor image stabilization and that is part of the history.

-or-

2) it could be that true film, from too many playings and splices, etc, may have worn sprockets causing -- as in the case of "the brain that wouldn't die" -- even the title screen and text to "jump around" in a slightly nauseating way. This could be improved -- albeit at the cost of significant processing resources -- by being run through an image stabilization program.

Might there be one? Or even to download the video and run it through my OWN (as yet nonexistant(*)) image stabilization?

Thanks! And again, great effort!

(*) when I first got a digital cam with video, I downloaded a trial (watermarked) stabilization program, and it worked very well, so I KNOW the technology is there; I just didn't plan to take many videos so did not buy it, but knew it worked.

we *do* have a new set of technology we *can* run on an audio or video item, that I've lovingly named "Craptions", 8-) that runs a crude audio-to-text set of code over media and then makes an ".srt" file of the text it found.

I caution you that it is often quite and comically wrong 8-)

Would you like me to try it on this item?

Every time I use the HTML5 player, the following happens: About half an hour into any file, the progress bar and the counter stop, and if it's a video file the image freezes. The sound continues to play. Pausing and unpausing the player gets the image moving again. The Flash player seems unaffected. I'm using Firefox on Windows XP, both fully updated.

I opened your link, but I don't know what I'm supposed to do, sorry. It shows a link that says "From Apple" and then there is a player of some sort. There's no songs to play so I don't know what to do with it. Anyhow, I am just hitting the "Prefer Flash" link and it plays flawlessly from one track to the next. I only need to click on the first song title, and it goes automatic after that - I don't even have to hit the Play button at all. In the html5 version, I have to hit play, then pause, then play again at each track start.

I could *swear* this worked before with my own handrolled JS, and have a page that shows it can still work now. Am touching base w/ the jwplayer folks to see what they think.

I'm not sure we'll get this player to do that (ironically, though, it had a plugin in the prior version that could come close to this).

We should one of these days start prioritizing multi-photo items and/or items w/ photo album kind of contents to make some sort of basic-to-fancy way to show them off, agreed.

But honestly, I'm not sure when that might be! 8-(

for our audio items, we don't have an audio volume control due to default jwplayer v6 skin (which we are using) and short vertical height setups.

for our video items, there's a volume level as before (but looks a bit different).

OK, actually, I've been able to patch the JS so that at least when in html5 (non-flash) mode (the default), if you mouseover the mute/unmute icon in the controlbar, you'll see a working, interactive volume level slider.

Sorry in advance that I can't offer a flash mode patch like that!

I came across your site when I Googled 'Joseph Conrad'. While there, I took a look at the audio pages of poetry.
Now, I'm not the type to knock someones work. We all have our ideas of what's a good presentation. But when I listened to the audios of a couple of Poes' poems..... well, lemme just say I was astonished. I was transported back to grammer school listening to a no frill, no emphasis, no heart rendition of the mans' works. I figure you can do much better than this.
Listen to them. See what I mean?
If you want me to, I'll record and send you readings of Poe as they should be done.
Lemme know.

Current distribution... No adblckers or javascript restrictions.

Good thing I suppose... Despite everyone's apparent luv affair with Iframes THEY ARE A KNOWN SECURITY HAZARD ..and the new players over the last few years have been an overall major nightmare for anyone using them.

I STILL have never heard ONE GOOD EXPLANATION as to why the old Vee-Jay player was retired

sure they do work! (that's my daily / dev browser, too)
(including off-site iframe embeds working)

the only real alternative to iframe embedding is incredibly hard/impossible to change/migrate often CPU-eating flash object/embed tags. and flash plugin has security breaks extremely frequently.

Perhaps it's just a vagary of connection speed. I work over wireless and at a new location with a faster connection the player works. At the old location what ended up happening is the player frame displayed but the start arrow was totally inactive. As if it were a picture, not a player. With flash embeds I usually see some sort of immediate response to a click on the arrow (dimming, or some response) even if the player buffers for a while before running. The player just looked and acted like a static image when I wrote the original post.

ah! ok, cool, thx for checking again and replying -- VERY appreciated.

yes, so maybe our player isn't giving good/any feedback when it's having a hard time getting started or when it can't get close to the needed approximately ~1Mb/sec for video to playback...

Hi,
I'm planning to embed the video player from archive.org to illustrate some articles in an online publication. For the embed code I'm following the recommendations on http://archive.org/help/video.php
The structure of the articles is like this:

["Some text... See doc 1"]

["Some text... See doc 2"]

["Some text... See doc 3"]

There is a test item here: http://ethnomusicologie.fr/test-item

The problem is that the button displayed in the middle of the video always shows "1." before the title of the video. Hence it is incoherent with the way the documents are referenced in the text of the article (document 1, 2, 3...).

I use the iframe code specified in the section "Embed a single specific video file for item with 2+ video files". But the player probably thinks that it still has a playlist, even though it is just one file long?

I don't actually need that number on the button. But I couldn't find a way to hide it in the iframe tag.
In the options of the standard jwplayer I found "displaytitle" (boolean) and "title" (arbitrary string). But setting these in the iframe code has no effect.

A few years ago, I worked on a similar project, where we embedded videos from archive.org. The code used the tag. See an example here: http://ateliers.revues.org/8827 Is it still ok to use this method (which circumvents the problem described above) or is it deprecated?

Is there anyway to allow users to download the MP3 or Wav from the player?

no you have to find the /details/ page on our site and then find download links there (where not all items have the download links, depending typically on the collection, etc.)

The music won't play in Real Player web window. Up until a few days ago it worked flawlessly. Now when I try to open a a web page in Real player I cannot play it or download it. Why?

we're not prioritizing compatibility with realplayer.
how does one "play our music" in realplayer?
using a web-browser internal to it? giving it our .m3u? other?

I am using windows 7 and the latest version of real player 11. I have been able to download 100's of Grateful Dead shows up until yesterday. I open the page in Real Player browser window and it will not play and the "Download Clip" button does not pop up anymore. I even tried clicking "prefer flash" button but nothing. I have no problem playing the stream from the archive webpage but am unable to listen to it or download it when streaming through the Real Player browser window. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

if it's not a "streaming only" item right-click or option-click on the link to the file you want to download. You should then be able to download it to your device.

Any chance of getting the player to remember that I prefer Flash from one session to another?
Both Chrome and some Android browsers have developed the irritating habit of putting html5 audio through the mangle after about a minute of playback, making it useless (a curse on html5 multimedia :~) )
Whenever I open the browser and return to the archive, it's jumped back to html5, and, of course, I always forget to check.....

Yep, never sticks in Chrome. Seems ok in other browsers.
Having said that, Chrome has been so cranky the past few updates that it might not be entirely your fault. It's only a problem because Chrome no longer does html5 audio properly.

As live music recordings are one of the bigger uses of the Archive, I think that seamless playback would greatly enhance the listening experience for many of this site's users.

A big part of the magic of many live shows of bands like the Grateful Dead, the Disco Biscuits, and many others, is the transitioning between songs, which is often interrupted with the current player. The gap between tracks that the current player has is a hiccup that interrupts the magic and atmosphere of live recordings, making clear distinctions between "tracks" when the audio was meant to be enjoyed as a seamless whole. It probably wouldn't be difficult to implement... maybe buffer the next track when there are only a few seconds left in the current one?

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the update! HTML5 is a much more compatible and open technology than Flash.

ps. I use Safari on Mac OS X

did you find it by following the directions?

the directions I added there because I figured the default jwplayer way of requiring the video to be playing and then looking for the "share" icon
wasn't 100% obvious.

so that's why you don't directly get the embed code when clicking the embed link, per se, to at least answer your question, if that makes sense.

I concede it may not be ideal, and it certainly doesn't sound like it from your post/perspective (thanks for chiming in 8-) but that's at least the answer...

You used to have a pretty good player. Now you've changed it to a horrible one. I've given up on trying to use it and just download the movies and watch them on my own player.

chrome works for me (macosx lion)
and i'm sure you have JS enabled.

think it was a case of cookie "scope" and versioning over time.

i've pushed live a change to the cookie name *and* minor change to the technique, so i'm pretty sure it should work now for you.

can you please let me know?
